It seems hardly possible that this faithful companion and upright guardian shares common ancestors with the wolf and the jackal. Yet, generations of careful breeding have transformed his ferocity into courage, his furtive cunning into perspicacity, and his predatory instincts into protective ones. Still, he retains an abiding distaste for & distrust of cats.
