a military religious order founded in 1020 to provide medical care for
pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. The Knights were expected to observe
obligations symbolized by the eight-pointed cross: live in truth, have
faith, repent of sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful,
be sincere and whole-hearted and endure persecution.
